18 Mar New Parks & Open Space Foundation Announces Exhibition to Benefit Deukmejian Wilderness Park
(Glendale, CA) – The Glendale Parks & Open Space Foundation has announced a collaboration with ART from the Ashes, a local nonprofit organization, to host an art exhibition to benefit the restoration and rehabilitation of Deukmejian Wilderness Park. The exhibition will feature art pieces created from burned materials removed from the Park after the Station Fire.
The newly formed Foundation was established in 2009 by a group of devoted Glendale residents who believed that a nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping parks beautiful and supporting recreation programs could have a positive impact on their city. The organization seeks to raise funds through events, donations, grants and other activities in order to nurture safe, clean, and well maintained parks and open spaces that enrich the entire community.
“We’re very excited about working with ART from the Ashes,” said Dottie Sharkey, President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “This art exhibition will be our first fundraising event, and the first ever like it in the City.”
ART from the Ashes is a nonprofit organization made up of independent artists and volunteers, founded by native Californian and Glendale resident Joy Feuer. The artists contribute talent, time and energy to create art for resource. Their goal is to provide a cathartic avenue to victims of wildfire by transfiguring fire site debris into beautiful works of art.
Nearly all 709 acres of Deukmejian Wilderness Park were burned during the Station Fire. The resulting destruction devastated the plant and animal life that once flourished in the Park and has compromised hiking trails and temporarily closed the park to the community. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will go toward the restoration of its habitat, the rebuilding of its trails, and the renovation of the historic Le Mesnager Barn.
The event will take place in downtown Glendale this June with details about the exact time and location to be announced at a later date.
