Walk on the Wild Side Nature Education Program
In the Spring of 2011, funds from the Parks & Open Space Foundation were used to help sponsor the “Walk on the Wild Side” nature education program.
The program, a collaboration with the Glendale Unified School District, brought students from three underserved Glendale elementary schools to Deukmejian Wilderness Park for a day-long education program which combined nature interpretation with Earth and Life Science Activities based on the State of California’s Fourth Grade Science Content Standards.
The program featured units on the geology of the park, erosion, food chains, and animal habitat. Over 300 students participated in the program from Franklin, Jefferson, and Edison Elementary Schools. As one teacher commented after the day was over, “This was a priceless experience for my students.”
